Filip Gilissen - The Winner Takes It All (2008)

The Winner Takes It All is an installation for a non-profit art institution that consists of the promise of one singular explosion. During the 10th edition of ‘Nuit Blanche’ in Paris Montmarte, The Winner Takes It All was installed in a non-functioning church. The installation was composed of 9 large confetti shooters which awaited the appearance of the 5000th visitor.

For the greatest part of the exhibition, the installation functions as a latent humming sculpture, surrounded by a massive amount of spotlights in a twilight space. Following a period of expectancy, building in intensity, the final crescendo may or may not come. The success of the artwork does not lie in acknowledging whether 4999 people have actually visited the exhibition. Neither will it be possible to acknowledge the winner or anyone know when he’s about to turn up. But when the absurd target is accomplished, the lights will go on, and the deafening explosion will last for several minutes. Post this prolonged moment of exhuberance, the confetti shooters, the lights and a thick golden carpet remain as witness of the event, till the end of the exhibition.

Wearable Organic Senior Fashions by Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth

Inspired by Norwegian folklore, “Eyes as Big As Plates” is a series depicting their neighborly Finnish elders festooned in the organic materials of their homeland, each an enigmatic but equally endearing character that has sprung to life from the old world fables. Holy Toledo. If you’re going to go down the rabbit hole of reading about that whale, I recommend a box of tissues. I want to do some sort of collaborative thing (maybe with a music person?) about the “52-Hertz whale” because I can’t get it out of my brain. The Loneliest Whale in the World.

In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:

She isn’t like any other baleen whale. Unlike all other whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.

Just imagine that massive mammal, floating alone and singing—too big to connect with any of the beings it passes, feeling paradoxically small in the vast stretches of empty, open ocean.

“A cryptozoologist has suggested that the 52-Hertz whale could even be lonelier than we realize, a hybrid between two different species of whale, or the last survivor of an unidentified species, plying the oceans in a doomed search for another of its kind, singing its broken song.”

the netherlands are renowned connoisseurs of the tulip world, amongst other things of course, and belgian photographer bruxelles5 has captured the polychromatic beauty of the vast tulip fields that bloom every year between march and may. annually in spring, the dutch countryside morphs into a sea of color, these particular images taken in the former municipality of anna paulowna in north holland from a small prop plane. the images corroborate the sheer magnificence of nature through photography.
