Filip Gilissen - The Winner Takes It All (2008)
The Winner Takes It All is an installation for a non-profit art institution that consists of the promise of one singular explosion. During the 10th edition of ‘Nuit Blanche’ in Paris Montmarte, The Winner Takes It All was installed in a non-functioning church. The installation was composed of 9 large confetti shooters which awaited the appearance of the 5000th visitor.
For the greatest part of the exhibition, the installation functions as a latent humming sculpture, surrounded by a massive amount of spotlights in a twilight space. Following a period of expectancy, building in intensity, the final crescendo may or may not come. The success of the artwork does not lie in acknowledging whether 4999 people have actually visited the exhibition. Neither will it be possible to acknowledge the winner or anyone know when he’s about to turn up. But when the absurd target is accomplished, the lights will go on, and the deafening explosion will last for several minutes. Post this prolonged moment of exhuberance, the confetti shooters, the lights and a thick golden carpet remain as witness of the event, till the end of the exhibition.
